The Preverbalist Manifesto
The Statement Instead of Looking
I /
Art is no longer looked at. It is read. A work only begins to exist once it has been explained. No statement, no work.
/
The text decides that what we're looking at is art, and the eye merely confirms what has been read. The text no longer explains the work. The work illustrates the text.
/
A work has its own nonverbal language. It needs no translator. It should speak for itself.
/
A Label Instead of Understanding
II /
The statement isn't for the viewer. It's for a system that doesn't want to make the effort to understand.
/
What's demanded of a statement is a quick formulation and a context that's easy to read. These are used to decide whether the artist is one of their own, whether they're relevant, whether they hold the right views.
/
Once the label has been applied, there's no longer any need to look.
